MANITOWOC — The names of two teens who died and one who was injured in an early morning crash today were released by Manitowoc County Sheriff Robert Hermann.
Lincoln High School students Chelsie M. Harding and Zachary D. Zahn, both 16 and both of Manitowoc, were pronounced dead at state hospitals. They were passengers in the vehicle. Driver Zachary S. Gauthier, 18, of Whitelaw, was injured.
Law enforcement and rescue units responded to the single-vehicle crash, which occurred shortly after 12:30 a.m. today on Manitowoc County LS, just north of Silver Creek Road in the town of Manitowoc.
Amber Miller-Duesher, a junior, said she has hung out with Harding, and she described her as “nice, kind, fun to be around.”
“Zach was a really great guy,” said senior Baily Kreie. “Yeah, he got in trouble a lot but he was a great guy. … He had a great heart, too.”
Kreie said she learned about the accident from her grandma, who called her this morning.
“My heart like stopped,” she said as she was leaving school at lunch. Kreie said she didn’t plan to go back for afternoon classes.
“I’m going to miss both of them really bad,” said senior Ryan Kitson.
The preliminary investigation indicated that a 2000 Pontiac Grand Am with three occupants was traveling north on County LS when the vehicle went out of control, entered the east ditch and struck a large tree.
Harding was transported by helicopter to Milwaukee Children’s Hospital, where she was pronounced dead due to her injuries.
The three were not wearing seatbelts at the time of the accident, according to the Manitowoc County Sheriff’s Department.
Zahn was transported by helicopter to St. Vincent Hospital in Green Bay, where he was pronounced dead later Wednesday morning due to his injuries.
Gauthier was transported by ambulance to St. Vincent Hospital. Exact injuries are unknown at this time.
Gauthier, the driver, was fined for speeding in July 2010 and faces a misdemeanor charge of possessing a controlled substance (Vyvanse) in February in addition to other charges, according to online Manitowoc County Circuit Court records.
